Chartboost Campaign Analysis

Now that you have your app setup in Chartboost, you will need to create your campaigns, assign the app to those campaigns and then periodically run an analysis on those campaigns so that you ensure you are advertising apps in your app that have the highest chance to make you money.  I am going to walk you through all the moving parts in this.

Campaign Setup

You are going to need a total of 4 campaigns setup and segmented by countries.  Follow these steps to achieve this: (I will only highlight the areas you need to change when adding the campaigns.  If I do not mention anything about a field then leave it as its default)

U.S. Only

  1. Login to your Chartboost account
  2. Click on Campaigns > Add Campaign > Publish in the Network
  3. Name the campaign Apple – US Only
  4. Choose iOS as the Platform (Or Android if you are doing this for an Android app)
  5. Select all the apps you want to use this campaign
  6. In the Campaign Targeting Section, select United States
  7. Click Save

Tier 1 Non U.S.

  1. Login to your Chartboost account
  2. Click on Campaigns > Add Campaign > Publish in the Network
  3. Name the campaign Apple – Tier 1 (No US).
  4. Choose iOS as the Platform (Or Android if you are doing this for an Android app)
  5. Select all the apps you want to use this campaign
  6. In the Campaign Targeting Section, click on Tier 1 and it will auto populate the Tier 1 countries
  7. Now scroll through that list of countries and remove the United States
  8. Click Save

Tier 2 and Tier 3

  1. Login to your Chartboost account
  2. Click on Campaigns > Add Campaign > Publish in the Network
  3. Name the campaign Apple – Tier2 + 3.
  4. Choose iOS as the Platform (Or Android if you are doing this for an Android app)
  5. Select all the apps you want to use this campaign
  6. In the Campaign Targeting Section, click on Tier 2 and Tier 3 and it will auto populate the countries
  7. Click Save

Rest of World

  1. Login to your Chartboost account
  2. Click on Campaigns > Add Campaign > Publish in the Network
  3. Name the campaign Apple – RoW.
  4. Choose iOS as the Platform (Or Android if you are doing this for an Android app)
  5. Select all the apps you want to use this campaign
  6. In the Campaign Targeting Section, click on Small Markets and it will auto populate the countries
  7. Click Save

You now have all 4 of your campaigns setup correctly and your apps assigned to them.  I would now give it a week or two for your apps to use these campaigns.  After a week or two you can then run the analysis to determine which advertised apps you would like to remove so that they no longer show in your app.  If you only own a few apps and the downloads are a bit lower then you may need to wait 3 or 4 weeks to do this analysis for as you may not have enough data to make the best determination of what apps to suppress.

Downloading Your Data

The nest step in this process is to download all the required data in order to do the analysis.  All if this is done from within Chartboost.

  1. Login to your Chartboost account
  2. Click On Campaigns and select Analytics
  3. In the Filter By Campaign or App box, click in there with your mouse and add the 4 campaigns you created above
  4. Under Platform make sure only iOS is selected (unless you are doing this for your Android apps)
  5. Under Role make sure only Publisher is selected
  6. Under Campaign Type make sure onlyNetwork is selected
  7. Under aggregate select Weekly (you can try monthly, but if there is too much data the export will fail)
  8. Under Time Range select Past Week (or you can choose a custom range if you wanted to)
  9. Under Group By select App
  10. Now under Actions click the Refresh button (a new blank window may open and something will start to download)
  11. Once completed open the downloaded file and you should have a cdv file filled with data about your apps, campaigns and the apps being advertised

You are so close now!  Now the fun begins!

I have create a spreadsheet that contains 4 pivot tables that will do all the analysis for you.  All you have to do is copy the data you just downloaded from chart boost and past it into the spreadsheet I am providing.  Sounds easy enough doesn’t it?  Before we go onto this step, please make sure you named your campaigns exactly as I outlined above.  If you have not done so, then this spreadsheet will not work for you.

Please download the spreadsheet from HERE

Notice that there are 5 separate tabs on the spreadsheet (you can see the different tabs at the bottom.  US Only, Tier 1 No US, Tier 2 and 3, ROW and data_from_chartboost)

  1. Open the spreadsheet that I have provided
  2. Open the fuel you downloaded from Chartboost
  3. Copy all the rows of data from the file you downloaded from Chartboost except for the header row (the row that contains all the column names)
  4. Click on the Spreadsheet you downloaded from me and click on the data_from_chartboost tab
  5. Paste the rows of data you copied from your download Chartboost file starting at row 2
  6. Click on the US Only tab of the spreadsheet
  7. Click on the Data menu in Excel
  8. Click on the Refresh Button

At this point you should see data populated in all 4 tabs of the spreadsheet (US Only, Tier 1 No US, Tier 2 and 3, ROW).  If you do not see data in those tabs then you have either missed a step above or did something incorrectly.  Please go back and ensure you followed ALL the instructions, including making sure you named the campaigns exactly as I have.

You may need to sort each tab if the sorting is incorrect.  The sort should be on the Sum Of Impressions in descending order. If you need to sort it, just click inside cell B5, click on the Data menu in Excel, click on sort and select Descending.

You will notice that in columns F, G and H I have applied some conditional formatting on your top 35 or so listings in each tab.  What you want to look for are those apps where either the CTR, IR or eCPM is low (dark red).  These are the ones you will want to exclude from your campaigns so that those apps are not displayed for advertising in your app.  I would suggest taking the top 3 or 4 apps that are underperforming and removing them.  If you don’t have enough data to make this assessment, then don’t do this just yet.  How do you exclude apps? Great question, just follow the steps below:

Excluding Apps In Your Campaigns

  1. Login to Chartboost
  2. Click on Campaigns
  3. Click on the Campaign you are excluding the app from (remember only exclude an app from the campaign it was identified in.  An app may perform poorly in the US, but incredibly well in Europe)
  4. Click on the Advanced Targeting tab in your Chartboost Campaign
  5. In the App name text box type in the name of the app you want to exclude
  6. Select the App
  7. Repeat this process for all the apps you want to exclude
  8. Press Save

Do this for each of your campaigns and try to do this analysis either weekly or monthly.  If you do, I bet you will see an increase in all of your apps eCPM’s

Let me know if this helped you or not.  I would love to hear your feedback!
